Underway

June 24, 2026 Robert Mitchell

“Build it and they will come!” I think a movie baseball metaphor is appropriate for our annual big event here in the Boothbay region. Only, in our case, perhaps a slight modification of the phrase might be, “Sail it, and, weather permitting, we hope they will come!”

Every year at this time, there are big doings here in “River City.” Windjammer Days sort of officially marks the liftoff of the summer season as the Harbor fills with visiting guests, seasonal residents and, fingers crossed, sailing ships from near and far. Ultimately, however, the final determining factor lies with the great Mother of Nature. The weather really counts and, despite all plans, Mother has the final say.

We noted Mother’s power during our recent Father’s Day outing at Boothbay Railway Village, a favorite spot for old timers like me. The smell of coal smoke takes me back and our ride around the Village aboard the vintage steam engine was nostalgic and damp. For our little new granddaughter and visiting friend Cosmin from Romania, the rain added a touch of Maine’s most unpredictable element. We got soaked during a real cloud burst as we exited the antique car collection and headed for the amazing model railroad building. But, as luck would have it, we were able to take shelter under an awning that protects an aging collection of parked boxcars from another time. Our cars, left with windows partially open, we not so lucky as the wind and rain swirled. We had water spread thoroughly throughout our car interiors. It was a real downpour, but brief. Happy Father’s Day nonetheless!

As is often the case, Maine weather remains an important factor. I can’t tell you how many weddings I have photographed with one eye to the sky, carrying empty garbage bags for protecting gear, and me. It’s just part of living in this wonderful place. We need the rain despite poor timing.

We don’t have all the cards! The final say comes from above, as it should. So, as we advance through the week of festivities here, during what has become an extended series of active days, we hope for the best and prepare for all other options. I have no idea what the weather will be. And depending upon who you believe, the most positive bit of information favors a “wait and see” state of mind.

This week’s Register adventure, an attached photo from 2004, reveals a glimpse of lucky weather. These two ships, the American Eagle and the Lewis R. French, got it right, “racing” just off shore on a beautiful Maine day. And weren’t we fortunate to be cruising along with our devoted captain Mark Stover. We have a wonderful annual gathering with Mark who manages to arrange his life to share with us. We don’t get out much (on the water) so it’s a real treat when we can gather up a couple of sandwiches and some non-adult beverages for a trip on the high seas, or the low seas, for us!

For all visitors and area folk who look forward to this week, good luck. Let’s see how it goes.

Bring your garbage bags, just in case, but know that there are options which can provide an equally wonderful experience, rain or shine. Enjoy!
