Tom

December 18, 2019 Robert Mitchell

There certainly are a lot of lights this time of year. An evening stroll through town or drive along our highways and byways is quite an adventure. People seem to have taken seasonal festivities to new heights. The traffic light at the intersection of Townsend Avenue and Route 96 is no longer the only game in town.

Over on Southport there’s a nice light show around the pond at the elementary school with quite a display on the church, the fire station and the town hall. We all know what’s coming as red the Closson trucks show up, ladder ridden with greenery. It’s usually a coldish day of the year too, which makes fastening things to buildings a bit challenging. I recall Mrs. Cowan, still.

Over in the Harbor and beyond, holiday displays abound, and from the amount of “off season” traffic it would appear that people from elsewhere are visiting to take in the lights. I would imagine the Botanical Gardens are a big draw too. These lights make me realize how fortunate we are to see. And seeing reminded me of my old “sight for sore eyes” buddy, Dr. Tom Nadeau, our local optometrist. His home, the former Dr. Bob Greene and family place, is very well lit. Tom did all the lights himself. I couldn’t resist a photo with him.

I didn’t really know much about Tom's life, but I do know he refers to himself as “A County Boy”—- Aroostook County that is. So, I Googled Dr. Tom to do a little creeping around for information. This is where my techno genius once again went completely into the ditch. When I spoke by voice to my phone's live in “Siri,” requesting “Oldest Best Boothbay Eye Doctor” the response “Best Senior Bladder Control” replied. It was not what I expected, nor should it have been.

Suffice it to say that many here in the Region are grateful for Tom's over 40 years of helping us “see the lights.”

Thank you Dr. Tom.
